Mono Monday #4: Oblè

Monochromatic Monday #4

The Oblation

The Oblation of the University of the Philippines, was sculpted by Mr. Guillermo E. Tolentino as an unfading symbol of the aspirations and traditions of the University.

The Oblation is strategically placed fronting the University Avenue( main entrance street to the University) and stands infront and before the University Quezon Hall (which houses the UP Administrative Offices)

The original oblation was made from reinforced concrete and was painted on to look like bronze. The resource used to make the statue was from the combined contribution of the university students of the school year 1935 – 1936, made possible through the leadership of that school year’s 1st and 2nd semester’s student council and officers.

I took this photo of Oblè (as we fondly call this symbolic structure) last friday, shown here wearing the “sablay” (the University’s nationalistic graduation garment first worn during my graduation in 1994, which replaced the western graduation toga) in preparation for the university graduation today, shows that “he” continues to be the symbol of the university’s desire and aspiration for continuous search for knowledge and truth, excellence of labor, love for country and service for society & mankind.

Conversion:

1. Using Picasa sharpen

2. adjust shadows & highlights

3. Open with Picnik then adjust contrast

4. create lomo-ish effect with 75%

5. then create the sepia effect

6. then focus zoom

Converting my photo to sepia and making him shine is my way of saluting the university (founded June 18, 1908) for its centennial celebration and of my continued gratitude and belief in the legacy of Oblè -- a spruce young man, standing erect, open arms and head held high, eyes slightly closed in contemplation -- descriptive of the youth’s total surrender to the university’s desire and aspiration!
